Cyber Kidnapping

"Cyber kidnapping"
is the term used to describe a relatively new and unsettling criminal practice in which offenders pretend to be kidnappers and utilize online resources to abuse and extort money from the victim's family. It's essentially a psychological con that preys on family members' vulnerabilities and fears.

This is how it usually operates:

  • Targeting: People deemed vulnerable, such as foreign exchange students or those who struggle with language, are frequently the targets of scammers.
  • Contact: They make contact, usually by phone or message, with the victim or their family, alleging that the victim has been abducted and is in danger.
  • Isolation: They deceive the victim into withdrawing from society, occasionally pressuring them to break away from their surroundings or stop communicating with others. This makes it more difficult for the victim to deny the allegations of kidnapping.
  • Proof of captivity: To incite fear, the abductors may transmit staged pictures or voice recordings featuring fake screams as "proof" of the kidnapping.
  • Ransom demands: Lastly, they ask for payment in ransom for the purported release of the victim.
The victim is typically not abducted and is safe behind the impressive facade. Only taking advantage of the loved ones' fear and desperation to pay the ransom is the goal.

Cyber kidnapping is a relatively new practice, but it has already caused enormous distress and financial losses for the families involved. Being aware of this fraud and taking preventative measures is essential:

  • Remain alert: Look for opportunistic calls or messages that purport that someone has been abducted.
  • Check details: Take your time paying the ransom. Speak with the authorities and try to find reliable sources to confirm the victim's safety.
  • Open communication: Keep lines of communication open with family members, particularly those more vulnerable.
  • Become knowledgeable: Identify the strategies used in cyber abductions and alert others to this danger.
Remember that the best course of action if you suspect a cyber kidnapping attempt is to remain composed and to alert law police right away.
